Preparing for the Workshop on the ELMCIP Knowledge Base

Hello, ELMCIP-Publishing-Seminar Participants. As editor of the ELMCIP Knowledge Base, I want to welcome you to this collaborative project and to encourage you to attend the workshop next Monday afternoon, 28 March. In preparation for the workshop, please gather some e-lit-related materials related to your research and teaching that you can enter into the KB. Here’s a list of what you can do or might bring to the workshop... 1. List of e-lit publishers: Since this ELMCIP seminar is on publishing, entering new publishers should be a top priority. Take a look at the list of publishers (primarily journals and presses) and identify a few that are not yet included but should be. Gather the core information about the publisher (name, URL, location, editors, email, and, if relevant, the ISSN or e-ISSN), which will be used to create a stub entry. If time permits, draft or gather a short description of the publisher that indicates its relevance to the field of electronic literature. You can enter this information into the KB during the workshop. 2. CV: Bring a current copy of your CV. You can refer to this to update your author profile and biography in the database and as a source from which to harvest creative works, critical writing, colleagues and co-authors, and teaching resources that you have written or consulted. 3. New-record source material: Information (URL's, bibliographic data, abstracts, etc.) about the new records you will create during the workshop. 4. Your KB User Name and Password: Raine tells me that there will not be a wireless connection in the building where we are meeting. During the workshop, we will be logging in to the Knowledge Base via the University of Jyväskylä classroom computers. So, remember to bring your user name and password. Everybody, not simply the core ELMCIP-project members, has been set up with contributor accounts, which enable you to contribute to the KB by creating new records or editing and developing already-existing records. Many of you are already familiar with the platform and some of you have already begun the use the KB. I encourage you to continue to do so and, at the very least, to make sure you can log in. Here's our agenda: The aim of the workshop will be both theoretical, to discuss how to integrate the KB into our regular writing, research, and teaching practices in ways that will develop the field of electronic literature, and practical, to provide concrete suggestions about ways of improving upon the KB platform, its design and content. During the workshop I will briefly introduce the KB’s in its current beta version for the new users. However, the bulk of the session will be hands-on. That is, I will be asking you to help me, Scott Rettberg, and our colleagues at Bergen to test the KB’s functionality by creating new records and developing existing records. The session will provide you the opportunity to let us know what works, and what doesn’t, so that we can build a KB that, with sustained effort, will become a truly useful and lasting digital-humanities resource.
